"Oh," I said, regarding his crude calendar. There were a very large number of scratches.
"Like any other day," he laughed.
I let him have another small swig at the paga bottle. "Somedays," he said, "I was not sure that I marked the wall, and then I would forget; sometimes I feared I had marked it twice."
"You were accurate," I said, regarding the carefully drawn scratches, the rows methodically laid out, the months, the five-day weeks, the passage hands.
I counted back the rows. Then I said, pointing to the first scratch, "This is the first day of En'Kara before the last En'Kara."
The toothless mouth twisted into a grin, the sunken eyes wrinkled with pleasure. "Yes," he said, "the first day of En'Kara, 10,118, more than a year ago."
"It was before I came to the House of Cernus," I said, my voice trembling.
I gave him another drink of the paga.
"Your calendar is well kept," I said. "Worthy of a Scribe."
"I am a Scribe," said the man. He reached under himself to hold forth for my inspection a shred of damp, rotted blue cloth, the remains of what had once been his robes.

Current Scribes Caste Election Process
The Application Process will be placed on a hold during the Election Process. No current applicants to the caste will be permitted to vote within a current election as, by virtue of their status, they cannot yet be deemed active members of the Caste.
Term Limits:
The term of office for any Chair or Judge will be Four (4) En' Vars (Yearly starting Mid-July); if reelected, a person may hold that same Chair for one (1) more consecutive term. However, a person may be reelected to a different Chair and hold it for the same periods. No term will be longer than eight (8) En' Vars (2 Mun Years). After an absence of at least two (2) En' Vars (6 Mun months), a person previously elected may be nominated again. In the event a replacement must be named during the term, that person will assume the term limits of the chair member they replace.
Electoral Procedure
1.) Following the completion of the verification process, the nomination process will begin ( Elections held Feb/August). A scroll will be sent out as the official call for nominations. The nominations scroll must be returned to the First Chair of the Caste within (5) days. To be eligible for a chair in the Scribes Caste, the nominee must have been registered as an active scribe in good standing with the Caste of Port Kar for (1) Gorean year. (Three mun months.)
2.) After the nomination scrolls are received, the First Chair will notify those nominated and ask for a scroll of acceptance or declination. Those nominated for multiple chairs must choose only one chair that they will accept the nomination for. It will be highly stressed in the letters sent to each nominee of the expectations each position will entail if they accept and are voted into the position. Examples of those expectations are involvement, visibility and availability.
2a.) If the above process fails to provide a candidate for each position, the First Chair will send out a scroll to the current nominees for the vacant position informing them that the position has no acceptances and asking if any wish to reconsider their role choice."
2b.) If the above processes fail to provide a candidate for each position, the First Chair will send out a scroll as the official call for nominations for the sole purpose of garnering nominations for the vacant nominee position and ONLY that position. The caste members will be given five (5) days to answer with their nomination."
3.) Once the nominees are set, an election ballot will be sent out. The ballots must be sent back to the three (3) Chairs, and the Caste Scribe, and also sent to the reigning Caste Judge. Caste Members will have a period of seven (7) days to return the completed ballots. Votes must be based on the listed nominees, no write in votes will be accepted. Each of the three (3) Chairs will tally the votes, and submit their counts to the Caste Scribe and Caste Judge for verification purposes. Results will be announced within two (2) days of the end of the seven (7) day voting period.
3a.) In the event of a tie vote for any position, the candidates involved in the tie will be notified of the tie and may then decide if they wish to continue running or decline a secondary vote. Should both candidates desire to continue running for the position, a fresh ballot will be sent out by official scroll, with only the names of the two candidates involved in the tie, allowing the caste three(3) days to return their vote for the position in contention."
4.) Once the votes are tallied, and the new Chairs are named by majority vote of the Caste as a whole, letters of congratulations will be sent along with the election results to the entire registered Caste by the Outgoing First Chair. There will be a period of one hand to change the leadership of the Caste, and after that time new applicants will begin being processed once more.
5.) If you are elected to a position and you resign or abandon your position with out notice, you will not be eligible to hold a position the next two terms. (1 mun year)
